OVOF Symposium on Industrial Symbiosis

Learn how industrial symbiosis and circular economy can drive economic growth. Proposed local projects center around four areas: Resource Recovery, Local CO₂ Supply, Heat & Power, and Community Resource Network. Learn more about the growing Wenatchee Valley Industrial Symbiosis Initiative and its local projects, as well as other industrial symbiosis opportunities in the region, at OVOF’s Fall Symposium. Attendees will hear from some of the region’s leading practitioners and innovators about ways that industrial symbiosis creates economic value and eliminates environmental harm, and why the Wenatchee Valley is in a prime position to benefit from industrial symbiosis. The Wenatchee Valley was recently chosen as one of just seven communities in the state to receive technical assistance to develop industrial symbiosis parks. Pioneered in Denmark beginning about 50 years ago, industrial symbiosis is a ground-breaking approach to infrastructure and economic development in which one facility’s waste streams — energy, water, materials, and residuals — become valuable inputs for other businesses and entities. It can strengthen local economies, reduce waste, and enhance environmental outcomes just by doing more with existing local resources.

Annual Fall Ski Hill Cleanup

Last year we had such a fantastic turnout and we hope you can all join us again this Fall! We will be cleaning up around Ski Hill to help us prepare for the upcoming Winter. There will be a list of things to do at the Lodge, around the base area (trail cleanup, downed tree removal, weed eating, wood splitting, etc.) and on some trails. We will have FREE lunch for all volunteers thanks to the generous donations from Yodelin Broth Co. and Bosket Bread! Come for the whole day or join us for a few hours. Bring your family, bring a friend, bring your work gloves, and bring your stoke. Whatever time and energy you can contribute makes a real difference in getting the hill ready for the season ahead.

Wondering what artificial intelligence (AI) actually is, how people are using it, or how to get started safely? This session is for you. Join NCW Tech Alliance and NCW Libraries for a friendly, beginner-level introduction to AI. In this one-hour session, you’ll learn what AI is, how tools like ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot work, and how they can help with everyday tasks like understanding information, organizing ideas, planning, communication, brainstorming, and creating checklists. You’ll also practice asking AI for the help or information you need and learn simple ways to get more useful responses. We’ll also cover how to use AI safely and responsibly, including what information you should never share, when AI-generated information should be double-checked, and how to recognize common AI-enhanced scams. No technical or AI experience is required. Just bring your curiosity. Participants who complete the training receive a certificate. Optional: Bring your own device if you’d like to explore some of the tools during the session. This workshop is offered free to the community with support from Microsoft Elevate.

Red Barn Event: Recovering Endangered Plants

Recovering Endangered Plants of Central and Eastern Washington. In partnership with the Wenatchee Valley Chapter of the Washington Native Plant Society. Join Tara Callaway to learn about local endangered plants and their recovery. Take a closer look at several federally listed plant species found in Central and Eastern WA and what makes each plant special. We'll also have a chance to hear about the hurdles these species are up against, and some of the creative ways people are working together to recover them. Explore exciting new discoveries and developments that are contributing to their recovery. Maybe you have seen some of these species on your own walks and hikes around Leavenworth and Wenatchee- come find out! ##About Tara Tara Callaway is an Assistant Field Supervisor for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Washington Ecological Services Program in Wenatchee, Washington. She oversees a talented and passionate team of biologists in central and eastern Washington who implement all aspects of the Endangered Species Act. Williams' newest book, In the Range of Fire and Ice is a lively, groundbreaking exploration of Washington’s Cascade Range. Drawing on conversations with anthropologists, park rangers, ecologists, and climate scientists, as well as firsthand experience, Williams brings readers into the mountains to uncover stories etched over millennia. Tonight, he will be in conversation with author Ana Maria Spagna as they explore how the Cascades are not only a unique and amazing set of mountains, but also a living, evolving realm of fire, ice, and hope. ## About David David B. Williams is an author, naturalist, and tour guide whose award-winning books include Homewaters: A Human and Natural History of Puget Sound and Too High and Too Steep: Reshaping Seattle’s Topography, as well as Seattle Walks: Discovering History and Nature in the City. His newest book, Wild in Seattle: Stories at the Crossroads of People and Nature is a best of collection from his free weekly Substack newsletter, the Street Smart Naturalist. The presentation will start at 7:00pm. ### About the presentation Local author Ana Maria Spagna returns to the Red Barn to launch her brand new book, Coiled: Essays on Urgency and Kinship. “Ana Maria Spagna has written more than a book," writes poet CMarie Fuhrman, "this is a compass for our disorienting times. With the eye of a naturalist and soul of a poet, Spagna leads us through landscapes of grief, political turmoil, and ecological wonder, ultimately leading us to what really matters: kinship. Whether witnessing the release of a wild fisher or navigating difficult waters of loss, Spagna writes with the kind of vulnerability that at once wrecks and heals. This collection is a howl. It is a prayer. Her work has been recognized by the River Teeth Literary Nonfiction Prize, Washington State Book Awards, Nautilus Book Awards, and the Society of Environmental Journalists. She teaches at Wenatchee Valley College and in the Graduate Program in Creative Writing at Western Colorado University. She lives with her wife, Laurie, and cat, Maybelle, in Stehekin.
